# A Series A in India is a seed round in America

Same money, different word. What 7,049 rounds say about a label nobody agrees on.

The median Series A in India is $7.8M. The median seed round in America is $6.0M. Same money, different word. A founder in Bengaluru raising a Series A and a founder in San Francisco raising a seed are having roughly the same conversation with their bank, and only one of them gets to say they made it to Series A.

## Nobody agrees what a Series A is

Across 1,304 Series A rounds, the middle half landed somewhere between $10M and $30M. The company at the top of that range raised three times what the company at the bottom did, and both wrote the same two words in the press release. It gets looser as you climb. By Series C the middle half spans $40M to $125M. The label stops carrying much information at about the point people start leaning on it.

## Where you are moves the number more than what you call it

Europe sits between the two at every stage and drifts toward the US as the numbers grow. India starts furthest back and stays there. This breaks a common shortcut. Screen for Series B and above as a stand-in for company size and you will pull in Indian companies at $16M while missing American companies raising $50M at Series A. The label is being asked to do a job it cannot do.

## The biggest jump comes earlier than people think

Founders talk about rounds like they keep doubling. They do not. Seed to Series A is a 3.4x step, the largest on the whole ladder. Every step after that is smaller than the one before it: 2.3x into Series B, 1.9x into C, 1.6x into D. The steepest climb of your funding life is the one right after seed, and in percentage terms it never gets that hard again, even as the absolute numbers get scarier.

## So use the number

If size is what you care about, ask what a company raised. The amount means the same thing in Bengaluru, Berlin and San Francisco. The label does not.

## How this was measured

- 7,492 rounds announced between 1 September 2025 and 31 July 2026, of which 7,049 disclosed an amount. Counted by announcement date, and only rounds we serve through the API.

- One raise counts once, however many publications covered it. Amounts are converted to USD at the rate on the announcement date.

- Regional cuts use the company's headquarters country. Europe is 16 countries. Around one round in ten has no country attached and sits out of those cuts.

- Announced rounds only. Quiet raises are missing, which lifts the medians, most of all at pre-seed.
